Injury!!! What should I do UPDATED

This happened sometime in the 5 hours I was gone to work... I have attached pictures!

Background: This morning David let the goats out, and let the chickens out and left the chicken tractor open. When I woke up around 6:30 the goats were in the chicken tractor eating the chicken food. so we got them out and closed up the bottom half leaving one of the top doors open so the chickens could get in and out, because it was more than 4 ft off the ground I felt reasonably sure that the goats would leave it alone. And when I left for work David was still doing yard work. I warned David not to let them get into the chicken tractor and eat the food...BUT

When I got home I drove up to the gate and saw two little goats lounging in the chicken tractor near the feeder, The tractor wide open, top and bottom. I was mad,

I get close to the chicken tractor and climb in one hip at a time to pull them out. I get goat number 2 out fine, I put him on the porch and close the door so he can't get back in to the chicken tractor while I am getting number 1 out.

So I am getting close to the tractor again when I see that number one has one of his back feet off the ground, and I get even more mad, then I climb back into the chicken tractor and realize his horn got ripped off!!! So NOW I am ready to put David in his figurative dog house!

Thankfully there was not that much food left in the chicken tractor to begin with...  So I come inside and David said the injuries happened while he was trying to pull number 1 out of the chicken tractor after I left for work, apparently they both jumped more than 4 ft high and got into the top of the tractor, went down the ramp and munched on the food. As he was trying to get the goat out, and the goat was trying to stay in his foot caught on something, and during the struggle to free him David must have somehow dislodged the horn.

The leg isn't broken, but he does favor it and it does seem a bit sore to him when I examine it. The missing horn area is a bit red, and scabby in a couple of places but not actively bleeding. The other horn seems to be well attached, but he doesn't want me to touch it. I am wondering if the missing horn will grow back or not. If it will should I get the vet to burn the area asap? Is there anything I can do to help his leg or horn booboos?  What can I do for his pain?

Thank you for your help

  • Hopefully all will settle soon I know you felt terrible about that. -) Animals!! sometimes I call them my babies - and went they crash through the chicken pen just cause they use it to scratch on - I call them "those damn goats." ;)

Ok I got a hold of the vet today. He said he should be able to burn the horns again for about $10 a goat, but that if its too big he will probably end up just taking them off ...and for such a little guy it should not be that expensive. He said as long as he keeps holding his leg up and protecting it, it dangling limp he should be ok. The earliest I could get in was next Wednesday...The leg may heal by then, but if it doesn't he will get an x-ray for about $35 and we will see what to do from there. I have to do it on a day off because its a three hour drive there and back...so it takes a whole day pretty much.

  • The people at the farm where I got them said that they were disbudded, but my mentor suggested it may not have been done properly..so I am going to take both with me to MS to have the vet look at the horns. or buds or whatever they are, and I am also going to have him look at number 1's leg if he doesn't start using it again soon. I don't see any outward damage on the leg or hooves, but there may be some tenderness in the back of the leg where the tendons are...if that makes sense. Or it may just be that he's very shy and doesn't want me to handle him I am not sure....I hope that passes, number two is great!

I'm not completely clear on whether or not the buck has been disbudded. It kind of looks like he was, but you're talking about the horn being ripped off, so maybe not. If he was disbudded and the cap was just ripped off, he'll be fine. Have the vet look at it and give you an opinion on having it reburned. If he was disbudded, it doesn't look like a very clean job, so reburning both might be a good idea.

  • Thanks Tammie!

I called, but the vet was not in, she said that he should call me by tomorrow at the latest. He is not walking on his keg at the moment but I will keep an eye on him until the vet gets back to me.

If he can walk on his leg he'll be fine and yes Now would be a good time to get that horn burned.
  • The rest of the story is. I guess, we lost two chickens and David just got fed up between goats and chickens and said screw it and went to bed.
