Hi, I'm Debby

I am new to the whole farm business. It is something I have wanted to do for as long as I can remember. I spent the last three years in Iraq, as a contractor, paid off all my bills and put a good downpayment on a 10.44 acre farm in West Central Indiana.

My goal is to have a flock of Shetland sheep for fiber, three Nigerian Dwarf goats for milk, chickens for eggs and a couple of bee hives. It has turned out that my pastures are really overgrown, so I added two Angus steers to get it eaten down before I add the goats and sheep. I adore my farm and my new life. It is the best thing I have done, short of my three kids. (all grown up now) I can hardly wait for my goats in the Spring.

  • Congratulations! It is such a rewarding life! A lot of work, but oh, so worth it!
  • Sounds like you are going to have fun in short order.
  • We're getting anatolian shepard/great pyrenees mix.

The timing worked out very well that we are getting three goats (two wethers and a pregnant doe) from someone who can't keep them and the puppy will be ready to go right at the same time. I just have to finish the goat shed.

What kind of dog are you getting and how old. I am starting from scratch with a puppy, who will be virtually useless for at least a year, probably longer. I may need to get a llama. I believe I had some coyotes in the yard last week.

Congrats on paying off all your bills, that's quite impressive. Good luck on your farm. I'm also starting a small homestead on 11 acres in Vermont. We get our goats and livestock guard dog in October, we're very excited.

  • Thanks for asking. My English Shepherd puppy, Sadie, is growing like a weed. She was 12 weeks old last Saturday. She is definitely entering her terrible twos. Loves to bite, jump and sometimes totally ignore me. I love her. She and the 250 lb steers do pretty well together under supervision. They go nose to nose and then she decides they should play with her and starts her run, jump and bark. That's when I put an end to it. She will learn, eventually.

Welcome to the group! You didn't mention your puppy! How is she doing?
