Hello! New to the forum but not a goat owner yet.

Hi Everyone,

 

I'm in love with Nigerian dwarf goats and plan to own a few in the near future.  We are on the hunt for a farm come spring and one of the first animals I would like to add are these little guys. 

 

I plan to milk them and make cheeses and soaps.

 

Currently, I live a few miles from a dairy goat farm which breeds many ND's.  I have been trying to volunteer there with no luck yet.  I'm going to contact her again.  I really want to spend some time with the goats.

 

I have big plans for a little farm!

    I will be buying your new book soon. I'm going to visit a small farm this saturday, very excited.

    I just read the book "living with sheep" also. Very good book. I would love a small flock of navaho churro sheep.

    Ican't wait to get mine, it's supposed to be here on the 17th. Im going to pick up goats that day, but I will be ready to open it like a kid at Christmas when I get back!

    Jordana, sounds like you are not too far from me now in NC then.  I spend my summers in MI and we plan to move back up north permanently next summer or fall.  Sounds like you have a nice thing going!  How cool that you are from up north too.  I'm always surprised how many people I run into in the south that are from MI.

    ALSO, Deborah has a newly published book out about small farming and homesteading!! It's the book on the bottom of the ones in the sidebar on your right. Homegrown and Handmade. I haven't read my copy yet (it's in the mail) but I do read her blog, and I'm really excited about her book!!

    Welcome! I had not owned goats when I joined the forum either, Everyone here has been helpful, informative, and supportive through all my ups and downs. I hope you will have the same experience!

    That is awesome! We have a little half acre and use it to the greatest extent we can. Still a work in progress :-)  I grew up in MI too, the lower south-west corner near the Lake and IN line. I know Bear Lake area from a child's perspective.  I like the sounds of the farm you are planning! Maybe we will do business in the future! I love heritage breeds.

    I grew up in a very rural area in northwest lower michigan. We raised horses, a cow, pig and rabbits. We never had a farm though. I've always had a love for that kind of life. I have a degree in horticulture too. I have gardened since I was very little.

    I'm hoping to raise heritage breeds of goats, sheep, cattle, pigs, chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits and a few horses. Insane, I know, lol. I want to start a small csa also.

    My goal is to raise everything sustainably and naturally. Utilizing everything to it's maximum potential.

    Like I said, big plans for a little farm!

    What made you decide you wanted a farm? What other animals interest you? We have angora rabbits and chickens as our other working animals, and Rachel is right, your garden will LOVE all the natural fertilizer!
