Hello from KY!!!!!

Hey!  I live in central KY in the 'bluegrass region'.  I bought my first 2 goats 4 years ago, and now my little herd has grown to 14 goats!!!  I just had 7 kids 5 weeks ago, so my herd instantly doubled in size!  I am now 17 and I cut my own hay with my scythe, so I won't have a whole lot of time to get on this forum, but I'll get on as much as I can!!  I think it will be great!!

Hey Camille!! I live in KY also. Where do you live? I live in Somerset, south central KY. I've just gotten my first 2 goats so I've got a ways to go. Good to meet you!
  • Right now, we give it to them fresh so they have it when they come into the barn at night. If we're going to store it, we leave it to dry in the field for a few days so it won't mold in storage. It's just whatever happens to be growing around here -- nothing special.

Gee, I never thought to do that!  Not that I have time to.  Is it a certain type of grass you grow?  How long do you let it sit before you can give it to them?
  • Storage is the main shortcoming. We've tried piling it up, and we've used old baling twine to tie it into long bundles.

Really!!  Thats really cool!  I've never met anyone else who does it :)  All my neighbors think I'm crazy :}  How do you store if for the winter?  Do you bale it, or have you tried haystacks?  I bale it, and I'm experimenting with haystacks.  Just curious.  Thanks!!

Welcome! My husband uses a scythe to cut hay for our goats too. You're only the second person I've ever met who does that!
  • Welcome, Camille!  What a great idea!  We should do that... don't know why I didn't think of it before =)

Look forward to getting to know you!
