Hair Loss

One of my neighbors has an Alpine that is losing clumps of hair and has bald spots from the neck down to mid back. She is acting fine as far as eating and sleeping, just the skin irritations. He has researched, she gets a good mineral supplement with lots of copper & selenium. He took her to the vet today and they ran all kinds of tests and couldn't find anything- said it must be diet or hormone related. The thing is... His other doe is fine??? I told him I would ask you all. Any ideas?

  • I just took one of my bucks to U of I because of hair loss. I gave him a copper bolus, and it didn't seem to help, so I was worried about some other nutritional deficiency. Their answer: stress. Since he is six years old, the young bucks are trying to move up in the herd and challenging him and causing him stress. I still think there is something going on nutritionally, but I haven't had time to do any additional research. When I asked about nutritional deficiencies, the vet said that the other goats would be showing signs also. Grr...! I know some of my goats need more copper than others, so why couldn't there be an issue with another nutrient? Will let you know if I ever figure this out. Hope you'll post again too if you hear anything. Between my book, maple syrup season starting, and seven does due this week, I don't know when I'll get to researching this.
  • Hopefully Deborah will chime in soon. She has lots of experience/knowledge with nutritional deficiencies. My first thought is copper.  Whatever it is, it may just be that this particular goat needs more than the other.
