A goat needs three wins to become a MCH (in AGS) or CH ( in ADGA) or PGCH (in NDGA). There must be at least 10 goats shown from at least two different herds in the breed for the win to be official. A goat can have one junior leg, but at least two legs must be senior legs, which are won when the doe is in milk. BIS is the grand champion of each breed competing against each other at the end of the day.
I'd like a link or explanation of the "legs" and requirements for a CH. Is it similar to my dog shows, that needed so many entrants to qualify, etc? What is the difference between MCH, ARMCH, etc? The does are REALLY confusing to me! Does a Jr. Doe win really count toward anything, since they didn't have an udder (presumably) to show? How is the BIS determined, only one winner from each breed in the ring to determine BIS?
well, the showmanship thing is good news :) Of course, all the other things come with just being so taken with goats period. -) thanks for the reply - I noticed at the county fair - they just walked in circles, only one wasnt too into just standing still - the girl kept turning the goat again trying to get her positioned. But she was a gorgeous goat (to me) Nubian - but she wasnt called out by the judge :) If only I could master hoof trimming I would be happy. It so effects the way the goat stands. I am persistent - I have my stand "working" now - and if I have to rasp a little every day, I will. My clippers (orange handled) just dont get a good bite - I think I just dont have the strength in my hands to really press down good to get a good bite. Anyway - different subject
The milk question - is on websites I see the stars D's etc. and not to mention how in the world would you measure butterfat. and weight etc. thanks Deborah :)
There is the conformation part of a goat show, and then there is showmanship. In conformation, the judge is just looking at the goat, so you just have to know how to hold the goat, lead it around, and never put yourself between the goat and the judge. It's a little like learning to do a dance, a simple dance. In showmanship, the judge will ask questions about body parts, because you are being judged, not the goat. Of course, everyone will take their most well-behaved goat for showmanship, but some judges like to mix it up and ask you to change goats to see if the good showmanship is just because you have an easy goat or if you really know how to handle goats. Not very many shows have showmanship classes. Most are just for the goats.
(Melissa, I'll answer your milk question later today when I get home. I'm in Milwaukee at the moment.)

do you have to recite body parts? I thought you just had to get them to stand? I have no idea - was never in 4H nor exposed to showing animals.

Heavens there are tons of shows about. If you are wanting to learn how to show find a show and go watch. Ask your mentors what shows they go to, maybe go with them to one and learn. Dairy goat journal has some of the shows listed, Dwarf digest list shows that they are told about, Caprine news list shows sent in to them. Lots of the Yahoo groups have lists of shows also. I know the district 5 list will post up dated show lists. Any local goat clubs in your area? Call and check with them someone in the goat club will know of shows you can be assured of that. As for showing watch others ask questions and just go out and try it and learn. The judges are pretty laid back and some of them even will help you. I just let them know I was new when they were checking out my goat and they helped me positon them and talked to me. And in showmanship oh heavens did I make the major blunder. Told them I was new and just learning the body parts. He was asking some tough parts so when he got to me I told him I have no idea where any of the parts you have been asking for but I do know where the scrotum is. He did not let me live that down all day. Everyone thought is was pretty funny. But I made it through it and had fun. That is the main thing have FUN. I hope you find some shows close to you. Will try to find some in your area tomorrow but can't get to my papaers right now. Goats in the kitchen sleeping and if they see me they are up.
Goats in the kitchen eh? I have had house chickens before. do you put your goats outside in the morning? Do you feel safer with them in the house at night then outside?
I am new to showing goats as well. I have raised them for about 5 years but until now never had the courage to show. I use to show miniature horses and know all those rules, but this is new. How are you suppose to set them up? Is there a correct way? I went to a show but it was ADGA and there were so many unfriendly people there I didn't learn a thing. Everyone seemed to be setting up differently as well. Some goats were streatched way out and others were huntched up. Didn't seen to matter for placing. I would like to see an NDGA show but all I know of in Houston area is the Rodeo in March.

Could you narrow your question down a bit? If you're just looking for shows, they are listed on the websites of the sanctioning organizations -- AGS, ADGA, and NDGA.
I am with you on this one, I would love to get started showing. I am working with NDGA to have a show in Ohio. I will keep you posted with the progress.
