Flies

How do you control flies?

We moved our goats out of their usual house because there was poop all around it, but even out in the field there's flies. One goat in particular has flies all over her and she doesn't even seem to care! She's got a big black spot on her back and they seem to be congregating there, but they all have flies bothering them and they're just everywhere!

Is there any easy way to get rid of them?

  • A friend gave me a recipe for fly spray that seems to work very well... 1 gallon of vinegar to one 20 ounce container of ivory soap... mix and put in spray bottle... goats don't seem to like getting sprayed but it keeps the flies off!

  • We have been trying D.E. Dietomaceous Earth. It's all natural and is supposed to help with flys, bugs, and ticks. It goes everywhere. In the stalls, on the ground, and on the goats. We just started using it so not sure of its effectiveness.
  • Not sure what to tell you about keeping them away. I guess I need to find out about that too, just in case, but I can tell you something that is great for bites and will keep them away from bite sores, presuming it is safe to use on goats, we will need to check on that because it is only labeled for horse, ponies and dogs. But as far as I know it is safe on any animals. It is called SWAT and you can get it at about any feed store, tractor supply or Jeffers. I don't now if their is anything different about the clear(I have never used it) but the original is formula, which is HOT PINK is AWESOME! Just thought I'd mention it in case they are bit up from having so many around!
