Finding pics of names on pedigree!

Does anyone know of a better way to find pics of the ancestors on our pedigrees than googleing their name and hoping for the best. I went through heck trying to find a pic of this goat that is Butter' sire (and he is pretty famous, I guess you could say) so I don't have a lot of  hope in finding pics of all of them. I like to see as many of them as I can to get an idea of what to expect from my babies. Anyways, maybe one day I can start a special site for this. I think that would be really cool. What would you guys think of that? So here is the pic I had to look so hard for of  Butter' sire PGCH/MCH/CH SM3 Pines JurEn's Swell Foop (whatever all that means-I don't really care-but he is PRETTY) -Actually I have a bunch of this dude in my pedigrees-thank goodness he is nice!

  • To tell you the truth I think it would be a fantastic idea and if I were computer savy enough to set up new such sights as ancestry.com I would absolutely start a new sight for people to do there pets/livestock. Remember what I said earlier in this conversation about the pics etc., well wouldn't it be nice if there was a sight set up just for the animals. I should talk with someone about this.

  • Now you may laugh at me - I have seriously considered putting Ginger and her ancestry on my account at Ancestry.com.  I'm not sure how long I would get away with it but can certainly do it on my desktop program.  By entering her family tree , I also get her sister's as well since one can follow any individual added back as far as there are records. I've tried to decide the best way to organize the information I find, maybe this is the way.

    I can see it now:  GoatAncestry.com. <g>

    Seriously though, why not?

  • Sweetheart, I am tickled to hear that you are so excited about someone besides yourself doing this. Now it could be that no matter what you tell your friend, they may not understand, it could fall into a category I refer to as "If I have to explain you wouldn't understand". But, if you think it would help to explain, you should simply tell your friend that, not only are you interested in your kiddies family histories, but that you are interested in learning more about your breed and what it takes to become a star milker, a show champion etc. In short, that you want to be well educated on what makes a Nigerian Dwarf a "GREAT" Nigerian Dwarf, so that you will know what you should be striving for as a goal when breeding your babies. I can promise you there is a world of learning in studying the pictures and if you learn to make notes about names, pedigrees, farms, pics etc. you will learn. I have learned to do this from previous dog experience. After a while, you may as I have, begin to recognize certain characteristics that will lead you to the same herds, lines etc. that are of your taste and preference. I VERY frequently see pics that when studied lead me back to my goats family lines and to certain animals that I favor. Try it out and you will see what I mean. Oh yea, you will also begin to make connections with characteristics that you are not fond of and should note those things too. You may want to stay away from certain lines. I won't specify on the last as to not be rude etc. but as an example I will tell you that I seem not only to be very fond of but also have begun to recognize the look of Rosasharn (especially BUCKS) lines. I am VERY fond of what I see here and am therefore terribly anxious about my coming babies. I don't know why it is but I have such a passion for their sire. I just love to look at him (his pics). I have been to OLDESOUTH a couple of times and seen him from a distance. I ALWAYS go in his pasture but most of those big boys tend to mosey away when you go in the fence, although a  few come up for petting. Anyway, you keep it up and fill me in when you start to notice characteristics of certain animals you like. HINT: I find it much easier to compare the features etc. when I hit websites were the pics follow each other down the page without having to click on each animal. If you want to see what I mean take a peek at Rosasharn, Little Tot's Estate, Prairiewood or even mine ( www.bentpennyacres.com )and see how the pics are laid out one after another as you scroll down and you will see what I mean.

  • You have no idea how pleased I was to read this, Margaret. <g>  When I commented to a friend that I was looking at pics of Ginger's family, she thought I had lost it! As you know, it is more than a little interesting to see them. I even found a picture of Capri when she was a baby.  Though she looks nothing like Ginger, it was still cool to see her as a baby.

  • Ambitious huh! I hope that's not bad. I tried to learn everything I could beforehand. Then I purchased the most of the best I could find that I could afford. And topped it off with Butter. (That's Funny LOL sounds like I am topping a potato-yummy!) I have learned my lessons the hard way so I am trying to do the best I can. I am to old now for screw-ups and I can honestly say that I am happy with EVERY single goat I have. I know some are better and will prove to be more productive etc. than others, but I feel that as a whole they are a truly wonderful balanced herd. I love them all, respect each of there differences and expect a lot from them.

Thank you for the link. I believe I saw some notice somewhere on there site requesting those pictures. Wish I had Champions to send pictures of...one day maybe!

  • You are so ambitious, my dear! As far as I know, you're doing about all that you can do. AGS used to have pictures of all the finished champions on their website, but something happened to them, and they sent out an email asking people to resubmit, but I never did. There isn't much there, but here is the link:
