I bought this from Hoeggers, it said 1/2 t. on feed helps to prevent mastitis.  I thought extra calcium might be good, doe is pregnant.  But now, not so sure.  There is nothing else in this, dont want to throw off any balance with her due in 3 weeks.  No phosphorus which surprised me - just the two mentioned.

any thoughts??

  • I haven't used it, but I know someone who gave it to a doe that was pooping logs, and she said it helped. I have no idea how or why that worked.

But you've inspired me to pull out my shiny new copy of "Alternative Treatments for Ruminant Animals" by Paul Dettloff, DVM, and there is no mention of dolomite in the index. I just read the mastitis section, and it is not mentioned there either. In the mastitis section, however, he does say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." He was specifically saying that we shouldn't do dry cow treatments for animals that are not showing signs of mastitis, but I think it's probably applicable in this situation too, because like you said, you don't want to throw off the cal/phos balance.

Hopefully someone else can offer some insight.
