Doe with hugely swollen ear. Hornet sting??

This is my girl, Starlight.  Her ear is swollen up huge.  It is very thick and firm.  She was normal today mid afternoon, and when I went out for milking at 7:00 she looked like this.  It isn't hot, she is acting normal, normal appetite, normal temp and normal activity.  It doesn't seem to be causing her pain.  An occasional shake of her head is all I've seen.  Could it be a hornet sting?  There's a small dot of dry blood on the ear, in the upper middle.  Should I do anything?  Anyone had an experience like this?  Thanks for any input.  I sure don't want to ignore something important.  Right now she seems fine other than what the ear looks like.

  • Yay! Good to hear!

  • Thanks for asking, Deborah. :) I was going to update tonight.  Yesterday A.M. it was about the same, but by last night is was going down.  Tonight, it's soft again, and almost normal size, just a bit thicker than normal.  She has never seemed bothered by it.

  • Just curious if the swelling has gone down yet.

  • Great! :) Thanks Deborah.  I really appreciate the input.  I can't believe how swollen it is, but she does seem happy.  She's so funny looking when she looks right at me.  Wish I'd been able to get a picture of that.

  • Wow! That does look swollen. I think you're probably right about it being an insect bite. My motto is, if the goat is happy, I'm happy, so I probably wouldn't be freaking out too much at this point.
