Doe 2 Weeks from Kidding with Diarrhea

I have a doe who is 2 weeks from kidding and has come down with some severe diarrhea. She was fine one day then the next we had some major weather change with a lot of rain and when I went to check on everyone she had poop everywhere. It is really runny and almost black / dark green. I have not had much experience with adult goat getting the runs like this so don't know what I should do for her. I am even more worried because she is so close to kidding. I would assume it would be a good idea to get electrolytes in her to keep her from getting dehydrated. I have not gotten a temp on her but will tomorrow. What should I do for her?

  • Glad to hear she's better. Sounds like she got into something. If her fenceline is along a road, it's possible that someone threw something in the pasture when driving past, and she ate it. Someone in this group had a goat die a couple of years ago, and when they cut her open for a necropsy, there was plastic bag in her rumen.

  • She is normally a very dominant and bossy doe but the couple days she was down it was obvious just by her behavior she wasn't feeling well. On the 19th when I went out to feed it was clear she was better because she was clearly making up for lost time by putting everyone in their places <G>.

  • Thank You Deborah. I didn't have any kind of grain available to her nor did she she have access to anything different than normal (ei. same pasture no different plants), so I am not sure what brought it on. She came down with it sometime on the 17th and appears to be all cleared up by the 19th. It was pretty black and watery, all over the place. It made me worried because she is so close to kidding. She seems all better now so I am glad for that.

  • Weather does not cause diarrhea, so don't worry about that. There are dozens of things that can cause diarrhea. In an adult it is usually because they got into the chicken grain or basically ate something that disagreed with them, and it goes away on its own in 12-24 hours. How is she today?
