I wondered if they sometimes do that, like horses do. My white mare had two foals, both born as dark as could be, but then they became gray by 2 or 3 years old. It's pretty common in Arabians, but I don't know if it's seen in other breeds.

Cookie Monster, one of Oreo's triplets, is sort of a dusty charcoal black, not jet black like Oreo. The other day I noticed that the outer half of each of her hairs is dark gray-black, and the inner half next to her body is this gorgeous silver color. It just made me curious if she might end up changing colors, or if that half and half on each hair is just how it grows. Either way she's adorable.

  • Kids can change color, but I am always suspicious about the possibility of copper deficiency. Years ago I had a kid born black, and she turned chocolate, and the buyer was rather upset when she saw her because I had not told her the kid changed color.  I have also had some kids in the white to cream to red color spectrum that got lighter or darker.

I have seen the silver color you are talking about and it has never lasted in the 3-4 goats I've seen it in, and it didn't seem to respond to copper. It just came and went on its own when they were 3-6 months old.

  • Hmmmm... without pictures of it, I would say no.

From what I understand, goats that change color like that are usually copper deficient.
