disbudding iron

I am going to purchase a disbudding iron in the next couple of days. I remember Deborah mentioned a #30 iron I think, with a regular tip. Can you help me out on this?

  • Everyone I know who has used it has had bad scurs. You can even get scurs on the bucks with the larger tip unless you do a larger burn than the tip. (Some say a figure 8, but it's really just two overlapping burns.) It might be okay for does at that age, but we use the larger tip on bucks at 5-7 days and still get some scurs.

I am about to disbud our 3 kids age 5 and 7 days.. I bought the Rhinehart x30 from hoegger, but i bought the small nigerian tip.  It will take me too long to get a purchase delivered from hoegger out here in Northern Cal, so I'm hoping the tip will work fine!  The buds have not broken the skin yet, I'm hoping this will be a plus.  Has anyone used the smaller tip with success?

  • Lisa, from past threads I have noted that most use 1/2" on their nigerians. I have the Rhinehart x30 also and it came standard with the 1/2" tip.

  • What tip size do you use on Nigerian Dwarf goats? the Rhinehart x30 has 1/4", 3/8", or 1/2".

  • I also recently purchased the x30 and disbudded our 3 kids. I practiced on a board a few times and then did it for real. It worked really well. I got a nice solid copper ring around each bud in two 5 second sperts I was done.
  • Thanks, Deborah,

I will order in the morning.

  • We use the X30 that Marin linked to above. We just disbudded about ten kids this weekend, and it stayed RED hot through the very last one.
  • I use a Rhinehart X30. My aunt gave it to me when she got out of goats (she had meat goats). I use the regular tip as well.

This is a photo of it:
