Disbudding

Hi All,

I posted this in replies to another post, but hoping to get an answer or some advice and not sure if it will get seen in the replies...

Is it normal to have a bit of weeping from the copper ring, or does this mean I held it for too long? Or not long enough?

Stressful job, if anything I think not long enough because I was most likely being too careful.

He seems good now, behaving fine, just hope the weeping isn't a problem. No blood, just weeping, straight after disbudding.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Johl.

  • Hi Johl

The weeping is a response to damage of the tissue in general. It is not necessarily an indicator of  how well you did or didn't do the job :) You are looking for a solid copper ring during the procedure.

I would say that most of us have the experience of  a learning curve with disbudding. I recommend taking photos and notes and then you have something to go back and reference as scurs do or don't occur. That will give you a little more to work from the next disbudding season.

    • Thanks Tammy, taking photos is a good idea. I will do that.

  • All good, he seems fine now, looking at him now if anything being a first timer I have been too careful and not burnt enough. Lesson learned.
