Diarrhea

Hello everyone, I have a little guy who is 7 weeks and has diarrhea.  When he is out during the day it doesn't seem to be as bad, but when he is locked up at night he is just covered in the morning.  I have to give him a bath almost every morning for the past 4 days.  I was thinking it was him eating the duck food, which still could be a possibility, but there is no way at this moment to keep him out of it.  They cannot move to their permanent home until they are big enough not to squeeze through the fencing.  The only other thing that is concerning and why I am asking for some help is that his fur looks not as shiny and full as the other 2.  He doesn't have any bald patches, but he defiantly looks thinner and dull.  That has been changing over the past weeks.  They are eating alfalfa pellets, they have minerals and Baking soda, at all times.  He does eat a lot of Baking Soda and I have seen him eating the minerals also.  They graze in our backyard during the day and are kept away from the duck food all day.  He eats the grass, and other things around the yard all day. They are starting to drink water also..  He is acting completely normal.  Running around, playing etc.  Not being sick acting at all.  His lids are a healthy pink and not white.  Was thinking could be worms and have been looking for the signs.  Any advice would be helpful.  I know that their are feeders you can make for your chickens that keep the goats out.  If anyone has advice on that too I would love to hear your ideas.

Thanks Janel

  • If your ducks have a pond, they have a great life! They can eat all sorts of bugs, frogs, mosquito larvae, algae, etc.
  • Thanks I removed the duck food for 2 nights now and his diarrhea is improving.  I got a hold of the breeder and he gave me advice also.  I wasn't sure if the ducks would be okay without food all night, but with them having to share a house at night together, had very few options.  Seems like the ducks just swim all day so was worried they would be hungry.  I guess they will learn the routine and realize they have to eat during the day instead of swimming all day :0) What a lazy life they have.. LOL
  • I think I would start with a process of elimination and somehow keep him away from the duck food.  If that doesn't help, then take the next step.
  • If you think he's getting into the duck food at night, can you put him in a large dog crate overnight? Or can you remove the duck food overnight? The ducks will be fine without feed until morning. When we let our goats graze in the area around our chicken house, we hang the chicken feeder up by the ceiling. The chickens can't get to it, but that's not a big deal because they get enough grain in the morning, overnight, and in the evening after the goats are in the barn, and they're free range, so they can eat grass, bugs, etc.
