I would like to cross breed La Mancha does with my Nigerian buck. He has been running with them since October. Not sure if they are prego but have seen them in estrus last fall and his attempts. I am not sure if he can reach lol. Anyhow, questions are has anyone here done this successfully? I have had people say if he cant reach to put him on a bale of hay and back her up, cant see them tolerating that for me. Also he still chases one around but not the other. Does this mean the one he isnt interested in is pregnant? Thats how I thought it worked but I have a ND buck wiht my other ND does who are definitely prego and he still tries
When they show signs of being pregnant I will pull him, but if not I will let him keep trying.
Thanks for your help!

Apparently it worked. She kidded yesterday. She really didnt look pregnant and as I said I wasnt sure since we never saw him succeed. Tuesday I asked hubby if she looked bagged up to hiim or was it wishful thinking lol. Yesterday I go out and there are kids. Crazy.
Thanks for your suggestions
Agreed, thanks
It totally depends on the personality of the buck. The smarter, nicer bucks leave does alone unless they are in heat, so he'd only be trying one day out of 21 or so, if the doe was not pregnant. If you have a buck that is not nice enough to leave a pregnant doe alone, I'd separate the pregnant does because I wouldn't want them getting stressed by his constant chasing. In the wild, they could get away, but in a confined area, they can't. He may have realized he can get lucky with the does sometimes when they're not in heat, which is why he keeps trying.
Thanks Deborah, the buck is cahsing one doe off and on the last few months, but not the other. I have heard the bucks dont bother with them when they are pregnant yet I have a ND buck that still tries on the prego does. Not sure how to read that
I've had ND bucks breed la mancha does. They just have to have enough spring in their back legs to get up there. I found that a hay bale was too high and the buck was totally covering their back. Something about six inches off the ground is all you need, but your goats will have to cooperate. I never had any luck with helping them.
Thats great! I am thinking the same, eventually he will get it. and its humorous to see him running next to them with his tongue hanging out, sputtering.
Afraid that I really don't have the right experience for your question! But I do know that it is done quiet a bit with the large breed does and the ND bucks, so it can't be to darn hard to do. I imagine he will figure it out and I also have heard about people using the hay bales!
I would say that there is a pretty good chance that the doe he isn't interested in is pregnant but then again she just may not be in season right now either! It really is just a toss up. I have 2 big girls and I just put them in the pen and didn't worry about it, cause I figured lots of other people had already done this and the guys seem to be able to figure it out alright. Small males have been figuring out how to bred big girls forever. So I put my girls with the bucks and leave them. If it works it works, if not oh well, better luck next time! I am not really stressing it though, you know? Sooner or later, they will have kids. My boar just had twins with my ND. So, things are working out for me so far. My herd has definitely been blessed. They are awesome!
