Cow's milk ??

I was just reading that you shouldn't give a baby goat cow's milk, the type for human consumption

is that true ? I'm getting a rescue baby and I was told that they were feeding it part whole cow's milk and a power mix for goats. Yike's is this going to hurt the goat ?

He should be eating hay and grain at five weeks. Dam-raised kids start eating solid foods at a few days of age. They are born with teeth so are very capable of chewing food. If you just leave a bucket where he has access to it, he'll drink when he's thirsty.

  • Hi Sharon, Thanks. So far so good. He's drinking Sav-A-Kid milk replacer mixed with milk and so far his poops are formed and normal looking. He is about 5 weeks old. Does anyone have any thoughts on when I should start him with some grain, and is their any special type for babies ? I also give him warm water in his bottle, he likes it. I can't get him to drink from  a bucket yet. I've never had a kid this small. When I get them they have been weened .
  • I purchased my first bottle baby this year and I have two more weeks to bottle feed.  The farm I bought the goat from stated that I should just give it Cow Milk.  I was a bit concerned.  I can tell you that I fed Sav-A-Kid milk replacer mixed with cow milk and I did not have any problems.  I always watched the droppings to make sure they were formed and not watery.  I also received some good advise from this website, always hold the bottle up as if the baby was nursing from the mother.  My bottle baby did great and is very healthy.
  • Can kids still scour at his age? Might be good to use whatever they have and slowly mix in whatever it is you are switching him to...
  • I also heard the Johnes part and that it can get past the pasteurization process and still be in the milk.  However, I didn't have any goat milk when I bought my buckling, so when I ran out of the goat milk that was sent with him, I used organic cow milk from the store and mixed it with Tillamook Yogurt and Power Punch (which was also sent along for him).  I just now realized that the yogurt was not organic, so that was rather dingy on my part? =)  But that is what I did...
  • Thank you for that information, whats been done is already done. So I guess I'll find out tomorrow what the whole story is. Hopefully they gave one or the other and didn't mix up some weird concoction. I'm very nervous about all of this. But I'm praying things will work out for him.
  • I've heard people argue vehemently that you should (or should not) use milk replacer or cow's milk. And I've heard of people using them who've had babies get diarrhea. I've personally used both in the past and had no issues EXCEPT when I used a multi-species milk replacer. I actually had two piglets and a kid die when using it. So, I would never use that again. I had no problems when I used the Sav-A-Kid milk replacer for goats or plain cow's milk from the store.

I have heard that cow's milk from the store can harbor Johne's disease, and some people believe this causes Crohn's in humans, but that's very controversial. In a goat, it would cause Johne's as that is a ruminant disease.
