Cough with Buckling

Before we were able to go get our new goats, the whole herd got a cough.  We post-pond the pick up by a few weeks and he seemed better with just a little cough here and there.  Well we have had a very wet last few weeks and this morning I noticed his cough is back.  My husband listened to his lungs and they are clear.  Any suggestions on anything I could give him that could boost his immune system?  Everyone else is fine, I just think he is just a little more susceptible since he hasn't completely lost the cough fully from when he was sick 6 weeks ago.  He is almost 6 months old...

  • Ugh! I think the heat is frying my brain! I just deleted my last response. If you saw it ... levasole is NOT a white dewormer. It is in the same class as morantel tartrate. It comes in two different forms -- a huge bolus that is rather tough to get down the throat of a ND, and you need 1 1/2 for an adult, so you have to go through the misery twice. It also comes in a powder, which can be reconstituted with water and used as a drench.

I read about levasome??  for lungworm in goats - is that the same thing?  of course, I misspelled it.

  • Last year I had two goats coughing.  I worked with my vet and ruled out pneumonia, fecal exam was clear.  We suspected lung worm.  I used a wormer specifically for lung worm and their coughing cleared up.  I used a wormer with Fenbendazole.  This was all done under the guidance of my vet, she knows I know my goats and I did my research.

  • I just went through something like this - cough but I had extremely high fever with it. Vet said bronchial/viral inflammation - "pneumatic".  But she wasnt eating or drinking on top of it - felt like I was going to loose my goat, but thank God, the Naxcel worked!  goat is back to normal. first time for a sick goat. :(

  • That's awesome, thanks Deborah!! I will definitely be investing in those herbs...
  • I buy my herbs from Fronteir Coop online. You can get a pound of rose hips. Some goats love them; some don't. You can get them either whole or cut. The cut ones are easy to mix into food. If you're into herbs, I also get willow bark from them. I make a tea with it for my arthritis, but goats love to just eat it straight because it's tree bark. It's good if one ever needs the equivalent of aspirin because that's what aspirin was originally made from. Pain drugs cause me terrible stomach upset, but I can use the willow bark as tea with no trouble. It's so easy to use herbs with goats because they pretty much eat them all.

When I first got started out here, I bought Vet RX for all species, and they all seemed to be the same except for the box. It's really just camphor and menthol, from what I remember, so if you have camphor and menthol available, you could just try dabbing that on his nose. I think it just helps open up the nasal passages to help things clear out.

  • Try looking at Mollys Herbals they have an immune system builder that you could use.
  • Is the Vet RX for poultry? the only think I saw was for poultry... Also where can I buy the rose hips? is it a tincture, dried or pill?  I love using herbs so would love to try this one out.  I use herbs with our family a lot and try and stay away from antibiotics etc, unless we absolutely have to.  I think it really makes your immune system stronger.  Thanks for the advice.  I feel bad for him, it sounds so bad.  He doesn't have a runny nose or gooey eyes so that's a bonus.
  • We've only had this happen once, and we used Vet RX. It was a doe about the same age as your little guy. She'd had a cough for at least a month, and it cleared up about a week after we started using the Vet RX. I don't know if it really helped or was just a coincidence.

Whenever I think a goat needs a boost to its immune system, I give them rose hips, which are a naturally good source of Vit. C.
