With loose minerals, are you supposed to just leave a quantity of them out all the time, or the recommended amount each day -- in other words, can they/will they eat too much of it?

Yes, you leave it out all the time. If you can find a way, by buying a mineral feeder, or otherwise attaching some type of holder for them to a wall above the height of their backs, that would be best. They may or may not seem to eat a ton of it at first. It will depend upon how much they need the minerals now. They will self regulate their intake, and won't eat more than they need.
