Can you castrate a three year old buck who has been used for breeding and get a decent companion wether? And regarding scurs...if they can be knocked off why can they not be cut back, sorta like cutting a nail? I do not know internal horn anatomy but I assume there is some sort of blood supply to a real horn...is this also true for a scur?

I just bought a burdizzo on ebay for $5.00.. If you look around you can get a good deal!! I hated having my wether banded so I am very excited to try it out this spring if I have bucklings!! I'm sure you could go on youtube to find out how to use one. This is what I'm going to have to do. Everyone bands around here...
I think I would rather use a burdizzo from what I have heard and read, but I dont know a breeder or a vet near me that has used one and would give me a lesson.
I castrated a three year old la mancha buck. His stinkiness went away within a month or two. He was always friendly. I think the friend factor would vary from one buck/wether to another.
You can cut back scurs some. If you just try to rip them off or cut them off completely, there will probably be blood. And it won't be easy. Vets usually anesthetize when they work on scurs.
Interested to know the answer on the buck thing... I could have a wether if I can castrate them... but they are already older... (nearly a year) and large in 'that' area... lol As to the scurs, they often have blood supply to them, so you can't just take them off yourself, but there are vets that might do it surgically for you. At least in my area there are. Sometimes, the scurs don't bleed much at all when they come off... some of them bleed a lot. I think it depends.

That's what I was thinking. I need to get one and learn to use it. :)
Deb, did you band or use another method when you castrated at the older age?
