buckling not walking right

I have a buckling that was just born 12 hours ago. We noticed right away he was having trouble getting up on to his back legs and when he did he walked on his toes not his hoof. I checked on him this morning and he is getting around better but still walking on his toes. Has any one had this happen? Should I take him to a vet to be looked at? Will he eventally walk on his hoofs? I am just worried about him he is able to get around and is otherwise active. He is nursing just find in fact he is a big pig. Thanks

  • Yay! Glad to hear he is doing better. You didn't mention how many siblings he has, but something they are so crowded in there that their legs can get stuck in an unfortunate position, which causes problems with development. Once they are in the real world though and can stretch their legs and start using them, it's just a matter of time until everything works itself out.

  • Update: Checked on him this morning and he seems to be walking correctly. His back legs are a little shaky. But seem to be getting better. I think maybe his muscles in his back legs were just weak and now he is gaining stregth. We will keep a watch on him but I think he is going to be ok.

  • Just checked on him. He is walking better. He is walking on his hoof on the one back leg. The other back leg it seems as though his Knee ( not sure thats what it is calld) he is having a hard time controlling. His other leg was just like it but seems to have gotten better. I guess we will keep watch on him and if it does not get better in a couple of days we will take him to the vet. We had planed on castrating him since his mom is a FF.

  • Yes he is walking on the front of the hooves. Nothing looks broken and he can move all his joints

  • Some kids take a little time to get everything figured out. I'm not really sure what you're saying that he's doing wrong. Is he walking on the front of his hooves? Is the pastern (ankle) straight? Does it look like something is broken? Or do the ligaments seem loose?
