Buck went down yesterday and is still down.....

Well, my buck Amigo fell down to the ground yesterday while trying to run to his shelter during a rain storm. He went down and could not get back up. I carried him to the garage and started trying to figure out what is wrong with him, but without my vets help I am just pissing in the wind.

He is NOT running a fever nor does he have a snotty nose, but his lungs rattle when he breathes. His eye lids are pale and he has diarehha. He is very alert and will eat, but he cannot stand up.

I called a PH D goat friend of mine and they were thinking that he may have a very bad case of lung worms so we have started treatment. I will be taking him to the vet first thing Monday morning, but he needs to make it through today first.

I gave him some Red Cell for Iron, Vit. B complex for energy, Ivomec for lung worm. I will be repeating the Red Cell and Vit. B. today.

Has anyone had a goat do this before? Any ideas?

Please pray for him.

Thanks all,

Kelly

  • Oh Kelly, I am soooo sorry darling! *HUGS*

  • So sorry! You did what you could. Maybe it was cocci?

  • I'm so sorry to hear that! Hugs!

  • I would like to thank everyone for their prayers. I am sorry to say Amigo passed away this morning after seeing the vet. He was very anemic and had because of that, wound up with phnumonia. It was just too late.

  • Thanks Margaret! You and Anchovy are in mine also along with everyone else now. I am afraid that I am still new to all these goat problems too to be much help, but I know there are several here that can. Could their snotty nose be due to the weather?

Thanks Deborah! Right now he is just weak and not paralyzed. I will help him stand but at the moment his front legs will not support him. It seems to me that he is very congested so I have given him a decongestant in hopes of clearing him up  a bit. I am not sure what is going on with his lungs but they sound horrible. I sure hope the vet can come up with something tomorrow. :-(

  • Can he stand or walk at all? I he seems weak, it's probably just stomach worms, but if he seems paralyzed, maybe meningeal worm? In either case, ivomec is a good start.
