Buck escape!

I broke my 2 fences rule.  It was pouring rain and I left the does and babies in the hallway of the barn because some of them were getting wet in the leaky shed.  Later it stopped raining and they were grazing around the driveway.

Next thing I know, I look out and see my bucks happily eating my garden.  Turns out when I was seeding the back pasture I forgot to turn the hotwire on so when they saw all the does right there they busted through the not hot fence.

So this means that Miyagi the big buck and Bliss were out with my does for as much as an hour.  I had not noticed any girls showing signs of heat, and when I saw the bucks they were not anywhere near the does or showing any interest in them.

Is it too much to hope that no one got bred?  They all kidded recently- Penny & Annie about 8 weeks ago and Velvet like 2 weeks ago.  So none of them ought to be bred so soon.  Plus I don't want Penny or Annie pregnant by Miyagi because of the Truffle incident.

Should I try to get that stuff from the vet- and what is it called again?

  • Oh, then I have plenty of time.

  • My vet said to use it one week after breeding.

  • Plus I hate hormones because I got some Regumate on me once when I worked with horses & let's just say the results were undesireable!!  They use regumate to  keep show mares from cycling while they compete so they don't get crabby at an event.  Nasty stuff.

  • Well- it's just Miyagi's size.  He's nothing like a La Mancha, but he is big.  I bet he weighs 25 lbs more than Bliss at a guess.

But lots of people since the Truffle incident have suggested maybe it is not unsafe to breed him to  my ND does but I am just a worrier and won't do it because I would just worry worry worry for 5 months straight- and it just isn't worth it!  Besides, I LOVE the mini m ancha I bought for him and she popped his kids out with the slightest little "unnh" lol

Now I kinda wish I had tried to get it!!  Oh jeez.  Penny had Miyagi's kids before just fine.  But she had a singleton this year and if she had a singleton by him...see???  This is what I do!

So how long is the window that you can use the stuff?  Is tomorrow too late?  I think the vet's open till noon, I might could still get some if they have it.

  • Just saw your other post. Of course, no one would think you're negligent if you don't dose them with lutalyse! The only time I ever used the stuff was when my la mancha buck got in with my ND does, and after the second time that happened, "he" became an "it!" Using any type of drug always makes me nervous.

  • Being a hormone, the milk withdrawal is probably really short. There is 0 milk withdrawal for oxytocin because it peaks in about 15 minutes. Lutalyse is prostaglandin, I think. If that's the only thing slowing you down, you should ask the vet. Sorry I don't have time to look it up; I'm running right now!

  • Well, they are all in milk- so for one thing I would hate to throw away I don't know how much milk over it, too

  • NO, I don't think so at all! I would probably be the last to think that or use it! I might would be considered negligent if it were me because even if I thought they may have bred, I wouldn't use it. I am very opposed to using that type of thing myself, so I completely understand your not wanting to use it. Not in a situation like this. I just don't want to be giving mine stuff like that because to often after everyone is convinced that drugs are safe is when they realize they cause serious problems! It just scares me.

  • Well, we also examined their lady parts and could see no signs of being bred.   And I had had them out in the hall of the barn w/ the boys on the other side of the fence and none of the girls were over there flirting or anything (same day as the escape).  The boys were not even paying them any mind or blubbering at all.

IT is still pouring rain, I've still got the girls running around loose so now I locked the boys in their stall so there can be no shenanigans.

Sounds like no great cause for concern...nobody thinks I'm negligent if I don't dose them with Lutalyse?  I don't especially have the money or want to give them some harsh hormone for no reason...

  • Not that my herd represents a scientific study, but I've never seen one in heat two months after kidding, so ... I personally would not be freaking out, and I would be totally not even thinking about the one that kidded two weeks ago. Some boys just like to jump fences, especially if they see something tasty on the other side. But as Margaret says, it's your call.

Lutalyse is the drug, if you want it.
