Bottle babies

I am just curious.  How much milk would you feed a bottle baby?  And at what intervals?  I am just curious after watching a video on this site about premies.

Thanks

Melissa

  • They should max out at 18-24 ounces a day, depending upon who you talk to. I personally do 24 ounces a day top. When they're first born, they won't take more than a couple ounces at a time, and so we feed them every three hours for the first couple days. We gradually stretch that out as they take more at a feeding. By a week, they're usually taking four bottles a day at about 12 ounces total (3 ounces each bottle), but that's not engraved in stone. Some take more at that age; some less. If you give them too much, they'll get diarrhea, so definitely don't go over the 24 ounces, and don't let them take too much at one time. They'll usually hit 18 ounces by two weeks and 24 ounces by three weeks. At a month, I go from four six-ounce bottles to three eight-ounce bottles simply for my convenience. At two months, I cut back to two, 8-ounce bottles a day, and I usually do that for a couple weeks, then cut back to one 8-ounce bottle until they're three or four months old, depending upon how they're growing. They will always act like they're starving, and they'll drink more if you give it to them, so don't let him convince you to give him more than 24 ounces a day.
