Blood testing

Hi everyone,

Just got blood drawn yesterday by the vet, to test for CAE, CL & Johnes.  She said that the blood would be sent to UC Davis in CA.  From what I've read on here, everyone else's vet sends the blood samples to WADDL.  It's too late now, but should I have requested it sent to WADDL, instead of UC Davis?

Hi everyone!  Good news!  The vet called this week, and said that my herd all tested negative on CAE, CL & Johnes.....and YES, UC Davis did do the ELISA test for the CAE tests. :-)

  • Great news! I remember feeling so relieved with our negative test results.

  • NCDVL in Raleigh NC does Elisa and is very inexpensive. Not sure what the out of state rates are but in-state is $1.50 for CAE and Johnes, and the CL they send to another lab so I'm waiting to see what the charge is with shipping. We have a satellite  lab here that I can drop off the vials to and they send them by courier so there's no charge for that.

  • Hi Marie. Hmm, I'm not sure that is what they usually do, but I didn't ask them to do the ELISA test specifically. It was my first time getting anything like that done, and I can't remember asking them to do anything but test for CL, CAE, and Johnes. I do, however, remember that my friend gave me a paper to bring with me to give to the lab. It's entirely possible she may have filled out something on the form asking for that (if there is a place to do that). Can you see anywhere on the order form where you can make a choice like that? I can ask my friend about this tomorrow if that would help.
  • Hi Kristi--- Thanks for your post.    Did UC Davis do the ELISA test because you specifically asked for it, or is  that what they usually do for CAE testing?

  • We have used the Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory in College Station, TX. They also do ELISA for CAE as well as for Bluetongue. They also do a PCR for Bluetongue. Very reasonably priced....

  • The CAE test is the reason most people use WADDL. The vet would have to draw blood again and send it to WADDL. Some people suggest testing again six months after your first test when you are starting your herd or have brought in new goats, just in case it takes a few months for your goats to sero-convert. Testing is not super important until you are going to have kids, so if your does are not pregnant yet, you could wait until they're bred and due in about 4 weeks. That way if one comes back positive, you'll know you should take the kids away at birth and bottle-feed.

  • Thanks for responding Deborah....I knew you would know the answer :-)  I will call the vet tomorrow and see what test UC Davis does for CAE...do I need to worry about specific tests for CL or Johnes?

The samples were shipped out Feb. 10th, and the vet said they would have results in 1-2 weeks.  I am SO kicking myself for just "going with what the vet said"...when I had already done lots of research about this, and knew that WADDL was the best choice (I just couldn't remember WHY they were the best choice).

So....if you were in my shoes, and tomorrow I find out that UC Davis does the AGID test, what would you do?  Would you have the vet send the blood samples to WADDL, or would they have to re-take blood samples? I only have 2 does and 2 bucks, but I really don't want to have to pay double for the testing, but I guess it would be a lesson, well-learned on my part!
