I just disbudded my doeling and did it well, nice copper ring, knocked the "bud" off and burned it and then when finished put Allushield on them. She did well and went right to mom for suckling. But after a few minutes I noticed a trace of blood coming from under the "bud" area. I have sat with her for 5 minutes twice putting pressure on it but it still oozes out after. Then she scratches with her hoof too which doesn't help! Any ideas? I'm watching it but I don't like that it continues to bleed!

  • Thanks, it really scared me and being only my fourth disbudding, I was hoping this is not a frequent occurrence! I looked for bleeding after I finished but it showed up a little while later. I have more kids coming and need to be brave and ready to handle this. It's hard enough without scary things like this happening!

  • Glad it stopped. In the future, like Patty said, touching the iron on it again will cauterize it and stop the bleeding. We've only had that happen on a couple of kids, so it's not very common. Sending you a big hug!

  • I had come into the house for 10 minutes and then ran back out there and found this:

2771470464?profile=originalI was feeling panicked since I had tried flour and pressure and nothing was working! I got in my car and raced to the store and got some blood stop (note to self: always have it!). That seems to have worked. I cleaned her up and poured a whole packet on and held it with cotton ball for 30-45 seconds. Seems to have worked (whew!).

  • I would say yes, reheat the iron and do it again.  So sorry you have to do that.  It's hard!  I once had a doeling that I disbudded, then outside in the bright light I could actually see hairs still there in the center of the bud.  I had to do the whole thing again. :(  However, even having it done twice she loves us. :)

  • Help! It's bleeding a lot and nothing I do stops it! Should I reheat the iron and hit it with that? :(
