Barn Cams

So this year I was thinking about adding a barn camera to observe kidding instead of walking outside all the time in the freezing weather. Anyone have any suggestions? I rather not spend an arm and a leg. I like the idea of having one link directly to the computer or even a smart phone.

  • I have the Logitech 700e. You first buy the master system, which comes with a camera, and then you can add additional cameras. You'll also need a router for your computer. The cameras transmit through the electrical outlets in your house or barn - there's a box you plug into the outlet and a very long cord from the box to the camera, so the camera can be quite a long distance from the outlet. I bought the master system and a Cisco router from Best Buy, and then went to the Logitech website to get the additional cameras. I'm not techie at all, and I found it pretty easy to set it all up. I love being able to look in on the farm from my iPhone, especially to see the does all lounging on a bed of hay in their barn, chewing on their cud or napping!

  • I bought a camera at Harbor Freight, $79 I think, and hooked it to the television.  It uses a standard telephone cable with the clips on the end.  It has audio and is sensitive to the light so as long as there is any light at all, you can see what is going on.  I had originally gotten it for the chicken house (raccoon problem) and just moved it to the goat area when I got my girls.  Sometimes I swear they know I am watching them because they will get up and look right at it!

  • Diane, I would love it if you could give us some details about which models or whatever that you have. I looked up Logitech cameras and saw several different ones.

  • Oh great, I dont mind spending a little money on my goaties! Where can I find?

  • Last spring, I installed Logitech cameras in my goat barn, one so that I could see the interior of the barn and one directed at the yard outside the barn. I wanted to be able to keep an eye on my pregnant does while I was at work, and at night so that I wouldn't have to camp in the barn when kidding time was close. They worked so well that I ordered another one that I installed on the second floor of the house so I could see the whole barnyard (to watch the llamas, sheep, chickens and ducks, and keep an eye out for the neighbor's idiot dog). I just got two more to install inside the house. I can watch the video on my iPhone or computer, and can program them to send me a text or email when the camera detects motion. I haven't done that, of course, because I would get an email about every four seconds. :) They can also store video, but I haven't used that function yet, either. The system isn't cheap. Might cost you a hand and a foot instead of a whole arm and leg, but I found them to be super easy to install and easy to operate.

  • Wish I knew the perfect solution to this one. I would love to set up cams and have a feed that could be seen from the computer or a phone while I am not even home would be even better. If ya'll know how we can do that one let us know. I am going to start talking to some people around town etc. and see what I can find out.
