Alfalfa Pellets

Hey all,

For the first time, this year I'm going to be using alfalfa pellets instead of alfalfa hay when my does give birth (any time now).  I'm not sure how much to feed.  They'll get free choice grass hay when not on pasture. They don't get out on pasture every day, but about 4 days a week average.  It's been raining too much here to get them out as often as we'd like.  When they are on pasture they have a variety of grasses, dandelion, a little clover, birdsfoot trefoil, some yarrow, some raspberry, hawk weed...a bit of everything I guess.  They'll also get Purina goat chow along with free choice kelp and minerals.  Does anyone have any ideas for me about how much of the alfalfa pellets they'll need?  The Nigerians are around 55 lbs and the mini-Nubians are around 80 lbs.  Many thanks. :)

  • Thanks, Deborah.  Yes, I am finding that she doesn't think they're all that great.  She does eat about 6 to 8 cups a day, I think.  I'm not sure if that's enough or not.  I mix them with her grain as well as leaving a dish of them out for her all the time.

  • They can have alfalfa pellets free choice just as they could have alfalfa hay free choice. The problem may actually be getting them to eat it. Most goats are not crazy about hay pellets. If they turn their nose up at them you may need to mix them with the grain.
