  • As far as I know, that breeding should be fine as far as age goes. :) Happy kidding when the time comes!

  • Thank you for that reassurance. And yes, I know about breeding different breeds/sizes of goats/dogs, etc. I don't necessarily like to mix breeds anyway. We breed Labrador Retrievers to Labrador Retreivers, Great Pyrenees to Great Pyrenees. Fortunately our Labrador Retriever  retired sire is neutered and can't do anything his female Great Pyrenees friend. Unless I get a LaMancha doe(s) and breed her to a Nigerian buck, I'll just be breeding Nigerians to Nigerians.  Anyway, the reason I ask is because I want to breed my 8-month-old doeling to a 10-yr-old buck come April or May. Both her and her sister are big girls (40 lbs and 45lbs, and no, they are not overweight) and could be bred right now but I don't want them to kid until September or October.

Thank you again for clearing that up for me. Now I can confidently plan that breeding!

  • There shouldn't be any reason not to breed them because of age difference. The only reason you might not breed a yearling doe, is because she's not big enough in SIZE to breed, but not because of age. She should be at least 40 lb before you breed her. Bucks, you don't have to worry about that, because their size isn't relevant to pushing out a kid... The only thing you really need to worry about is breeding goats of different breeds. If you're ever breeding a buck and a doe of different breeds, be sure that you ALWAYS breed the smaller breed buck to the larger breed doe. Think of it like you would when you're breeding dogs. A female chihuahua can't birth pups sired by a great dane, but a great dane female could easily birth pups sired by a chihuahua.
