Advice needed on doe purchase

I'm needing some advice on a doe I'm looking to purchase as well as whether or not to replace one of my does. This spring Cayenne freshened for the third time. Her daughter who I bought with her freshened for the first time this year and the improvement on Hosannas udder over Cayennes is Huge!! Thankfully Hosanna kidded a doeling and a buckling out of my best buck and I will definitely be keeping her. However, Cayenne kidded twin bucklings and appears to be struggling to to feed them. They're getting enough - barely. She's had a really dry coat all winter even tho I've copper bolused and they have free choice Sweetlix Meatmaker minerals. A friend suggested BoSe or a selenium/Vit E supplement so I plan to give that this evening. Last year Cayenne fed her single buckling and I got a max of 2 cups from her and it was never much over a pound. Recently I've noticed, Cayenne and several of my other girls have bare patches on their noses. I'm sure it's a deficiency, but what? Currently I'm feeding free choice grass hay, Chaffhaye (with DE) BOSS and the thinner girls are getting some green cheat grass that's started growing and some grain. Anyway to finally get to the point, am I getting a clear picture of what Cayenne can produce or is there something I need to do to give her the chance she needs? My two other girls with babies are producing more than enough for their twins. If Cayenne can't produce much more than she is now than I want to sell her and replace her with a doe with more potential. This leads me to my next question. I'm looking at a doe from a friend that had triplets and is currently feeding 2 of them. The third had a problem with its feet and was pulled at birth. After taping her teats for 11 hours she was milked and they got 500 ml or 2 cups. The babies are Fat and growing very well. Is 4 cups per day enough to have Fat, well built kids? I'm posting pics of the girls' noses and an udder pic of the doe I'm looking at.

  • It's so weird reading a label for horses! I have no idea how to read the label since it tells you how much is in each pound. You could probably offer it free choice.

What are your thoughts on this supplement, Deb? http://www.amazon.com/AniMed-Vitamin-Selenium-Zinc-lbs/dp/B004QHCMM...

  • I can't quite figure out. The lady has been breeding Nigerians, Lamanchas and Nubians for a number of years now and she hand milks them all. Maybe she doesn't try to completely empty the udder; I don't know.
  • Is it possible that these people are having trouble emptying the doe's udder when they milk her? Three cups after 11 hours wouldn't be bad for a doe milking two.
  • I'm using desktop mode on my iPhone because I like the setup better than the mobile.

  • So Co is only producing about half that, right? Which isn't that great.. The lady who owns her says she's not pushing them to produce a lot more and that 500 ml is about what most of her does produce. It doesn't seem like much to me.. I'm having a hard time finding good does in my area. Her animals look great tho with no deficiencies visible.

There is already a very long thread on here about goats losing hair on their noses:

A quart after 11 hours is about right for a doe at a month fresh. She's probably at her peak.

If a doe isn't producing well by he third freshening, she's probably not going to improve a lot more UNLESS there is some sort of nutritional deficiency at work.
