4 month old doeling with loose stools....

We just brought home 4 (4month old) doelings and a 4month old buck. One of the does has loose stools somewhere in between unformed (some balls, some soft poop) and then runny poop. The breeder we got them from said some of their goats have had a bit of diarahea for a few says but it just cleared up. She said the feed they were buying was doing it. Last night I watched her poop ( I know TMI) and they were normal. I'm feeding purine goat chow, BOSS (treat- trying to make them like me lol), hay, baking soda, manna pro goat loose minerals, and their on pasture. They were on pasture at the breeders too. They all seem to be acting & eating fine.....

  • now that they're all coming to me, how much do i give them? or do i just replace it with a treat or something? They even ran to the gate last night when i was bringing hay lol

  • Yes, they do butt heads and push each other around a lot. It is worse with some goats than others.

They've all started to come eat from the bowl and we got a 5th doe so we have a total of 6. Frank my buck is very rough on the girls. They let him push them around until they've had enough and push back and then he leaves them alone. Is this normal playing behavior? The girls push each other around also so it's not just him.

  • Sounds like you're definitely on the right track Lisa! I don't have my goats yet but I do know that it take time, patience and dedication to learn all the little signals that you'll see instantly down the road. Enjoy your goats!! I'm waiting Very impatiently for it to work out to pick mine up!!! :)
  • Thank you Deb for the reassurance. I do love standing out there watching them interact. I brush them down, rub their tummies, touch their hooves & lifting their legs up. Getting them use to our touch. They like to come over and inspect me. Yesterday night I decided I was doing the best I can and will continue to learn about them.

  • I understand! Watching them is the best thing to do, so that you'll learn what's normal for them, and you'll get to know them. Instead of letting it stress you out, just tell yourself that you're out there having fun with them and getting to know them! :) Spending time just hanging out with the animals every day is very important.

My two 3 month old ND kids arrived a little over a week ago and I've noticed a mixture of goat berries & then berries kind of stuck together. So every time I go out to the barn to feed/water them I stand around waiting for them to poop. Having goats is kind of stressing me out. I feel like I'm doing something wrong or I won't catch something before everything goes terribly wrong. They aren't getting any grain at all, only free choice hay, kelp meal, & baking soda. My mineral order hasn't arrived yet.

  • That is really quite interesting.  I'm glad to know about it. :)

You can buy them online for about $30 but i used a kids nylon belt (my husband calls it a boy scout belt lol) and i just sewn on a piece of canvas material in a double layer. It's starting to twist around his waist so i'm thinking of buying a dog harness and sewing the canvas to it.

  • Interesting!  I've never heard of such a thing.

I have a goat apron (non-mating apron) on him so that he can't get the girls pregnant.
