Worming pregnant doe

I have two pregnant does.  One is due to kid in about 10 days and the other in about three weeks.  I am seeing signs of worms in one of them (clumpy poop, off her feed, etc.)  I knew this was probably going to be an issue as we have had to keep them penned for a few months while we work on new fences.

Anyway, all I have is Safeguard.  I have read different things about worming pregnant does.  Is Safeguard safe?  I try not to worm unless I see signs, so it's been a while.  How much do you all give your goats?

Thanks!

It's all in your book and I just finished reading it.   Thanks so much.

  • You can't see most intestinal worms with the naked eye, so not seeing worms doesn't really mean anything. However, you don't want to use a dewormer unless your goats actually need it. You should check body condition and inside of eyelids. If the eyelids are white or pale pink, that's a sign of anemia, which is most often caused by the barber pole worm. Eyelids should be bright pink or red. Here is more information about why you don't want to use a dewormer routinely:  http://www.homegrownandhandmadethebook.com/2015/03/dewormer-resista...

I use Ivomectin for my goats.  I haven't seen any worms, however should I deworm them? They are 3months pregnant.

    thanks

  • Yes - I haven't been giving my does grain at all, and they've been penned and browsing the same area for a few months now, so worms are definitely the likely culprit.
  • A sudden increase in grain can cause that or even diarrhea, but if you haven't changed the doe's feed, then it's more likely worms.

hello, i was under the impression that clumpy poo is from too much grain ? but i'm a newbie owner (going on 4 1/2 months)

  • Thanks, Deborah!

  • The only two dewormers considered unsafe in pregnancy are Valbazen and Levamisole, so yes, Safeguard is fine. You double the dosage on the bottle.
