When to supplement

One of my first fresheners gave birth to triplets yesterday. I have seen them all nurse and they are all acting healthy and alert. However the last kid was significantly smaller than the others. Should I supplement his feedings or should I just let mamma take care of things? How can I tell if everyone is getting enough?

  • The best thing to do is to weigh them. That removes all guessing. They should be gaining an average of 4 ounces a day minimum. If one of them starts to fall below that, you will probably need to supplement that one. It is not always the smallest that has trouble, although it can be. One time we had quintuplets and the first one that needed to be switched to a bottle was the one whose birth weight was right in the middle.
