  • I know that cows go into a short heat cycle about ten days after the give birth to finish passing from birth. They get a little more aggressive and testy. Do goats go through a period like that too? It doesn't last that long in cows at all and I do understand that goats are not "little cows."

  •  Hej frm Sweden,

Thanks! Now it all makes sense to me and I will watch the weight gain.

Breeding and kidding once a year, so if your does freshened in August last year, they'd freshen around August this year. Wild animals also tend to breed once a year. I think it's too stressful on their bodies to do it more often. If you do it less often, they tend to get overweight, even if you're milking them -- or at least that's what happens in my herd! Every doe that I've ever milked for more than a year has become overweight.

  • Hej from Sweden,

Deborah, is that 1 yr from when she became pregnant or from the date when she delivers?

  • Hej from Sweden,

Not quite on the same line of question but kind of; when is it ok to bred a doe again? I have three does who gave birth in August and are no longer nursing their babies.  Two of them have been coming into heat for a couple of months now. When is alright to breed them again? Is there a recommended length of time between births and next breeding?

  • Okay, good.  Nope, not stinky.

  • Goats don't have bloody discharge when they're in heat. She is still passing blood from giving birth. Most goats do that for about two weeks. It's nothing to worry about as long as it's not stinky.
