Wanting to learn more about Nigerian dwarfs

Hello, I'm Arin and I must admit, my goats are mixed breed. However, they are 1/2 nigerian dwarf, 1/2 nubian and they were just bred to a nigerian dwarf, so my babies will be 3/4.

I have a little buck at the moment, he is a purebred Nigerian Dwarf, but I'm actually hoping to sell him now that he has done his work on our small farm.

My husband and I are city folks (from Los Angeles) who moved to the country two years ago. We live on a mountain and our land is not too level so it doesn't suit grazing horses or cattle, but it is excellent for goats. We need goats to clear out the blackberries, as a matter of fact. I'd also like to make goats milk soap. So we bought goats last year.

We are still learning about them and we are getting ready for our first babies in 2011, which is really exciting for us!

About me, I'm a married mom of three, a grown daughter with a baby, an 18-year-old computer whiz son, and a 14-year-old middle student whom we home school on public online school. We also raise chickens and ducks, for both meat and eggs, and have a small garden. We also rescue dogs from the humane society and put them up for adoption on petfinder as a hobby.

I'd really like to learn more about nigerian dwarfs!

  • Yes, my does are quasi mini nubian....they were the product of a nubian BUCK with a nigerian dwarf doe (oops!). She had healthy triplets and it was her first freshening, too. I did not buy her though, just the triplets.
I did not want to breed them to the larger nubian, being mini, and could not find a mini nubian around here to breed them to.
So I went with the nigerian dwarf and I like my little buck. It is time to sell him now and I kinda regret it, except he makes everything stink!
But since my original three are half nigerian dwarf and the offspring of the does will be 3/4 I'm quite interested in this forum.
  • Welcome to the group! In addition to my 30+ Nigerians, I have a couple of la mancha does that I'm hoping will make mini manchas for me. I've thought about mini-Nubians too, but I only have so much time and so many acres. We are also former city slickers who moved out from the Chicago burbs eight years ago, and we make soap and lots of cheese with our milk. Glad you're here!
