  • Good ultrasound equipment costs thousands of dollars. My husband is an electrical engineer and was able to get a broken machine that's 25 years old, and he fixed it. However, learning to use it is much harder than it looks, and we had a certified tech trying to teach us. A vet told me that you can get a fairly cheap machine for $1,000, but that doesn't include the probe, which will cost even more for one that's half decent. Having had my goats ultrasounded with three different machines (two at U of I and one at a local vet's office), I can tell you that the cheaper machines are not very good.
