I have just finished kidding season here and 12 new babies are running around like crazy.  Out of the bunch, I have 3 blue-eyed kids - 2 bucklings and a doeling.   One buckling and the doeling came from my blue-eyed mama and the other buckling came from a well-pedigreed doe who was bred to a blue-eyed buck that we do not own.  I already have 2 bucks who can be bred to most of our does and another blue-eyed 1 year old doe (from the same mama as the new kids).  Have I made this confusing yet?  So...I want to know if there is any value in keeping either of the bucklings.  Keeping them would entail making a new pen for them because they would be too "busy" to keep with the does and too small to put in with the full grown bucks.   Of course, all are adorable and it breaks my heart to think about selling them, but we need to be sensible.....so says my husband!

  • Unless you have a very large herd so that you can do a lot of different experimental breedings with a variety of does so you can figure out which one throws the best udders or producers or whatever, there is no point in keeping two brothers as breeding animals.

It sounds like you really like the blue eyes, but keep in mind that they add no value at all if your goal is to sell to people who are milking or showing.
