To breed again or not?

My 4 year old Nigerian doe had to have a c-section this year. This was her 4th kidding and the first time that she has needed any sort of assistance. Her first kidding she had triplets, second was twin bucks, third was quads. This time was twin bucks again and they were not big however one was dead and turned sideways and no matter what I or my vet did we couldn’t get him out without the c section. I am trying to determine if I should breed her again. What do you suggest for does who have had c-sections? What are your experiences? Should I risk her? If you would breed her again, would you wait any longer than usual? Thank you!!

  • Thank you I’m so relieved to hear that. The incision was vertical on her side so I’m glad that that shouldn’t cause a problem.

  • In most cases, there is no reason to avoid breeding a doe after a c-section.

Based on your goat's age, previous kidding experience, and conditions that led to this c-section, I would breed her again given one caveat -- where was the incision? If it was a vertical incision on the flank (the side of the abdomen between the ribs and the hips), then no problem. If it was a midline incision in the middle of her abdomen (on the bottom), then no, she should not be bred again because the risk of uterine rupture would be too high. Every now and then, I hear of a small animal vet doing a c-section incision there, so I always want to mention that.

Dead kids are notorious for being in the worst positions. Most of my worst kidding experiences were pulling kids that were already dead when the doe went into labor. If you are in my kidding course, the video of Ellie's first kidding had a dead kid presenting. She has since kidded three more times with no problems, including a set of quints.
