TIme to dry up?

Would like your input on whether or not to dry up Capri.  She is now averaging 1-1/4 cup per morning milking with evening milking from 1/8 to 3/4 cup.  At peak, she was averaging 1-1/2 to 1-2/3 cup (remember I started milking at two months, first time for both of us).

I've been sick this past few days and last night did not separate Ginger from Capri so there was little milk this morning so I am comfortable if I stopped milking that she would dry up naturally as if I had never milked; Ginger is apparently taking all that is available to her.  I had planned to milk Capri until after she was bred if only to keep her in milk for longer with the idea that perhaps she would be a good milker next year (her third year in milk).  This is her first year to be milked so I have no history from last year. Will whether or not I continue milking have any effect on next year's production as I will start milking her at 2-3 weeks if not sooner (depending on how many kids)?

  • If Ginger is still nursing, then Capri will keep making milk. Sounds like Ginger is not getting all of it, so Capri's supply will go down, but you don't have to milk her every day if you don't want. I wouldn't worry about future production.
