I'm looking at the tattoo kits at Hoegger's site. which size would I get for the ND? They have the 5/16" or the 3/8".

Thanks, glad I asked.
The size doesn't really matter. Both fit. I prefer the one with the auto-release. Otherwise, you have about a dozen needles stuck through the kid's ear, and you have to peel it off while the kid kicks and screams. Not fun! The only thing about the one with auto release is that you have to squeeze it REALLY hard -- much harder than the other one. Practice on some cardboard first.
