Spring Concerns

Hello All!

I am in charge of my county's 4-H Goat Project Newsletter. I am currently working on the spring edition and wanted some input. I am wondering if there are any concerns with spring that should be included, any spring show tips, breeding, etc. I am looking for you knowledgable goat people out there!

I could really use some help, so please respond!

Thanks!

  • I know the vet will give you a medicated medicine like an insecticide, I was given that for my cat once. I have also been told tea tree oil is good. It would be a natural oil.

Is there something besides baby oil that would get rid of the mites?

  • Yes, the breeder I had for my Alpines told me about that. The baby oil suffocates the mites. It may take a few applications and it really works! once I got a spray bottle to mist the outer ear then TRY to wipe it into the ear, some of my goats really did not like the whole idea. Usually goats do not like their ears touched at all.

I did not know of the ear mites. And it is funny you mention that, because one of my does was shaking her head around a lot and trying to dig her hoof into her ear. I will have to do something about that! Thanks!WG4

  • One thing I thought of was the problem with the damp spring, of course I live in Ohio. I have had a challenge with damp weather and having a place for the kids to play. Would dampness lead to a health problem, worms, cocci? The advantage is it is a good time to trim the hoofs, they are soft and easy to trim. It is a good time to get to know your goats, play and sing to them, yes I do that. I do see that the weather is warming up into the 80's starting on Monday. That is when I think of clipping the goats winter coats, trimming hoofs, checking ears for cleanliness. Baby oil is great for ear mites, if you see your goats shaking their heads, it is a good sign of mites. I just rub the oil on the inside of the ear with a cotton ball, they really like it too, ha ha. All year I think of the cleanliness of the buckets and feed bowls. I take a large bucket with a bleach solution in it to the barn and scrub down all the bucks and feed bowls and let them air dry. When I clean out the pens I apply some lime to the floor then put down wood shavings down for absorption them top with fresh straw. It is also a good time to make sure the vet records are in order, did everyone get the vaccines they need? These are a few of the things I think about, usually all year around.
  • I'm thinking that something on kidding might be good. Maybe you could ask Pat for permission to reprint something from Ruminations?
