Spider Goats?

I recently watched a program that discusses weird natural things. One episode was about "weird farming" so while husband slept on couch - I turned to that program.

WOW- first farm they covered (true stories theoretically) was about GMO sheep. Sheep crossed with spider genes - they say. Somehow they get silk threads from within the milk. I have no idea if this is a farce or real. The poor goats looked very unthrifty and it was bizarre but the rest of the stories were things I'd seen before or read about before - so maybe???

Weird!

  • No GMO needed for fabric from milk.

I doubt, however, humans will ever be able to match spider silk which undoubtedly is a good thing though it would make superb suspension bridges.

  • I might have mentioned this in my Homegrown and Handmade book, but whether I mentioned it or not, I do remember reading about it. (There is a small section in there on GMO animals.) They put spider DNA into the goats to get spider silk in the milk so they could use it to make body armor. It was a US Dept. of Defense project. Farming spiders has never worked, but since spider silk is the strongest substance known, they thought it would be perfect for making body armor, if they could only get enough of it.

  • Sorry - meant goats with spider genes. Guess it is old news - internet has lots of stories for a while now on it. Too weird.
