Hi all:

In my town - we are all on well water. My water is high in iron and sulfur. So we have a water softener and thus - water that comes out of the faucet has no smell of sulfur and doesn't make any rusty or green stains (iron).

BUT - I don't know enough about softeners to know if there is still residual. We will be getting a town-encouraged well water test this summer but meanwhile - wondered if anyone out there has experience in this matter.

  • We have way more experience in this area than I care to think about! If you can't smell it, and it's not causing stains, you're good. A water softener did nothing for us. We also bought a hydrogen peroxide treatment system (a couple thousand dollars) that helped some, but we still smell sulfur most of the time. (Our last intern called it fart water.) Alas, this is why we have to bolus with copper 3-4 times a year to keep our goats at an optimal level.
