Yes, this is the working diagnosis. Everything else was ruled out--so we assume it is this but they said "usually they look sicker when it is listeriosis." To me she looked pretty darn sick . . . and I guess we will never know. They don't culture for the specific bacteria--and abn CSF could be bacterial or viral . . . so there you have it! Frustrating. But so happy she is getting better.

That's very exciting! So, do they think it was listeriosis?

Good news. Olive is doing better. Fever going down, eating, seems "brighter" and more vigorous. The PCN seems to be working. If all continues well today we are going to bring her home and cont treating her in a place she is comfortable. Keeping our fingers crossed.

  • Hello all. Olive is in a lovely place where they are taking great care of her though I miss her terribly. She continues with a fever. She had CSF test done and incr large white blood cells--very suspicious for listeria. She is "a little brighter and nibbling hay" the vet says but I think this is due mainly to the banamine. They are having a hard time bringing the fever down w/ PCN and thinking of switching to tetracycline. Her labs were otherwise pretty normal except incr fibrinogen. She never has had CAE testing so we sent that and it is pending. She is 4 months pregnant . . . one baby (first freshener). So far baby vigorous but unsure what this all might be doing to the poor thing.
That is all for now. We are really saying prayers for our girl. She is a special one. And very strong.

Thanks for the info--today Olive is worse, weakness and falling to right side and head bending back to flank--think maybe listeriosis. Took her to U penn vet farm and hoping for good news. Laurie
