show goat feed - ammonium chloride

So I found a show goat feed at our local feed store today, and one of the ingredients is ammonium chloride.  My goats are not "show", and my two girls are pregnant..  do you think it would be safe to feed them?  I have successfully whittled down the amount of chow they are getting to a bare minimum, but would like to be able to use something as an add-in treat to their timothy hay pellets.  It would also be good, I think, as a treat for my buck instead of the chow without it.  Any input?

Also, what's the difference between Orchard hay pellets and Timothy?  Thanks.

  • Orchard grass and Timothy are different kinds of hay, I don't think that there is that much difference in their nutritional make up.  Just as alfalfa is another type of hay.  Orchard and Timothy are grasses and alfalfa is a legume, that is why is higher in protein and should mainly be fed to does in milk.

  • If you are only giving the buck a grain treat rarely, the lack of ammonium chloride shouldn't be a problem. A few years ago I looked up info on feeding AC to does, and it wasn't recommended. I don't remember why now. It sounds like you think you need to give them grain to be nice to them, but that's like thinking you need to give children candy to be nice to them. It really isn't good for them unless they need it because of lactation or poor body condition or something like that.
