Selenium before kidding

My does have 6 weeks to go before their due date.  I have had free choice Selenium out for them, but nobody touches the stuff!  The inhale the kelp, yeast, nibble on the Sweetlix mineral salts and baking soda, but noone seems to touch the Selenium.  I have read that goats seem to take what they need when you offer minerals cafe style.  I am wondering if they are not touching it because they don't need it?  Or should I go ahead and give them a BoSe shot before kidding because I know they are not getting any Selenium?  Any thoughts or suggestions?

  • I've been giving them Copasure every 3 or 4 months, and the Sweetlix has Cu.  So I am hoping this will make the difference this time around.  Thanks Deborah!

  • I have had kidding problems with one doe (3 weeks early delivery when she was a first freshener,10 days early second time) and the other 2 does have never successfully freshened (at least once I know one as breed and at 1 1/2 months she aborted).  But that is it.  No other issues.  I thought Selenium may help with the kidding issues.

  • Have you had symptoms of selenium deficiency in the past? (white muscle disease, retained placentas, kidding problems, lots of weak kids) If not, your does probably don't have much need for it. My selenium hardly gets touched unless the Sweetlix dish runs out, then they start chomping on the selenium. Remember, they are getting some selenium in the Sweetlix, so that might be enough for them.
