Rhododendron

One of my goats (only 2 months old) got half of a dried, but yellow leaf.  I called the vet.  He said that the goat should not vomit, and if it does then I will need to get medication.  All of the websites I read say the goat should vomit to get rid of the poison.  I have watched her and she has not vomited, she seems to be making more goat berries then usual.  Then seems to not be making any.  What else should I watch for?  Has anyone had any experience similar to this?  This is very nerve racking.

  • Thanks for the reply. The vet never said how soon she should vomit. I know she only ate a little because it happened while I was moving her from her bed to her pen. She seems to be OK now. Not a fun experience though, your worries are as bad as if they were human kids.
  • I've ever had a goat eat anything poisonous, but I am guessing that the vet said she should not vomit because she didn't eat much. Half of a leaf is pretty minimal. So, if they eat enough to poison themselves, they vomit, which means they need the antidote. I wouldn't pay attention to the goat berries in this case. They typically poop a lot when they've eaten recently and then not at all. This is something I figured out by having house goats and taking them into buildings to see people. I don't feed them for a couple hours before taking them into the show ring either, and they don't poop. If she starts vomiting, then maybe she got more than you thought. Did the vet tell you how soon she'd start vomiting?
