So it has been a crazy week.  My favorite doe was straining/pushing with  a prolapsed vagina, cervix, and rectum on Tuesday morning, which required a trip to the vet.  She is due June 26, over 2 weeks away still.  The vet got everything back in and gave her some numbing and  put in a "bearing restraint".  It is held in by a brace which goes around her hips and is sewn to her outside.  :(  He stitched up her rectum with a "purse string" to hold it in for a couple days.  She is managing to squeeze soft poo by the stitch.  We are to remove it after 2-3 days anyway.  He says he thinks she has a hormone problem with too much estrogen causing swelling which makes her think it is the kid and that she has to push.  He hopes the swelling will go down soon (not sure why? b/c she still strains some, but nothing comes out, yet).  The bearing restraint is to stay in until 2-3 days after she kids and he said that 'ideally' she will be able to push the kids out either above/below it ( I can't remember).

Anyone have experience with this ever?  Advice on what to do?  I hope that I am saying all of this correctly and relaying all of the info so that I can hear your advice, hope, help.  Thanks so much.  This has been most upsetting.  Say a prayer for Athena if you think of it!

  • So sorry. What a difficult situation! Good luck to you and Athena.

  • Wow. It is going to be a long couple of weeks...if she waits that long.
  • It will be interesting to see what she does after kidding. I really HOPE she doesn't continue pushing like that. If it is caused by estrogen, it seems that the only option would be a hysterectomy, and I recently faced an issue like that, and it would have been $1000, which is a steep price to pay to turn a goat into a pet.

  • Thank you. YES, RETIRE and she is only 4! The vet said if it is due to estrogen dominance she could continue to push and do this when she is in heat. I would imagine it would not be the same due to no babies, but I am not a vet.
  • I've never had an experience with this either. I hope it all turns out well. Sounds like you should probably retire her after this. How old is she?

  • Thank you!
  • I can't say anything about your experience, but sending all hopeful thoughts from a fellow Hoosier. Best wishes for Athena!
