Post partum bleeding?

I just went to check the goats and when Twonkie squatted to pee I noticed it was red. I can't remember actually noticing what her pee has looked like before today after having baby.  Is it normal for them to pee blood after having a kid?

She didn't go for her grain this morning, but she doesn't like to be far from baby and tends to follow her across the pen. She does seem sluggish this am, but then I probably seem sluggish compared to a HYPER kid.

  • Bloody discharge is normal for about two weeks. I doubt she is actually peeing blood -- that would be bad in any goat, whether they'd had a kid or not. Discharge comes out when it comes out, which is sometimes between peeing but could also happen to come out when a doe pees, but it's coming from the uterus. And if it's as hot there as it is here, all my goats are slow -- even the kids.

A goat that doesn't want grain is worrisome though. Does she not want it at all, or is she just slow to eat it? After my does kid, they are separated from everyone else, and some eat their grain casually over a couple hours rather than gobbling it up all at once like they do if they are in a group.

  • I do remember seeing blood after kidding for a few days, but I never saw the pee bloody. What I saw was thick, but that doesn't mean they didn't have bloody pee. If it were me I would keep an eye on her, maybe give her some vitamins, and call the vet just in case. Isabel was a little out of sorts for a couple days but she had a difficult labor and I had to go in and get one. I find that the does are tired... much like human moms that get no sleep after bringing a baby home, but for the most part are themselves. Did you worm her the day after kidding?
