Post-birth bleeding - Normal?

This afternoon, I noticed Capri who delivered a single doeling late Monday night has bloody discharge.  Is this normal?  Since this is my first kidding (her second), I have no idea about any of this.

I had noticed what seemed to be blood on the side of their stall area earlier in the week but thought it might have been from Monday night; however, this is fresh discharge with the hairs on her tail also tinged with blood.  She seems to be fine otherwise.

So, as with humans, is it normal to have bloody discharge after kid-birth?

  • So happy that everything is going well for you! I have to say that I really prefer twins or triplets. Like your vet said, one kid can be really big. I had a single kid this year that was 4.6 pounds! Mama had to push hard to get her out!

  • Mom and baby went to the vet at two weeks and two days.  All was fine.  Ginger, 4 pounds at birth, was already 8-1/2 pounds!  Mom had finished bleeding two or three days before their visit; vet tested both sides of her udder and said milk looked great.  Ginger got her first shot and was disbudded, still has her little circles where her horns were though she really has no clue anything happened.

I had no idea that when I hoped for one baby that it could be bad for Capri.  Vet told me that kids are usually 2-3 pounds but a single will be bigger and may be harder on mom.  Thank all that is good in the world that all went well.  The goat angels were definitely looking over us all.

This vet is great, really like him!

On Monday on our walk, Ginger had her first blackberry leaf, thought about it for a moment or two and then went for more!  Today (Wednesday), she ate her first dandelions and liked those as well.  We are off to a great start.  She has been chewing on hay since about a week old but hasn't yet figured out how to eat the berry treats but is interested; soon she will be like Mom and big sister and be eager to have them. :-)

  • Thank you, Deborah.  That is a relief.  I was reasonably sure it was okay but since I had only noticed it once (maybe) before, it certainly raised the question/concern this being my first time.  She seems fine otherwise, eating well, taking care of her baby, etc.

    Again, thank you.

  • Yep, it usually lasts for about two weeks.
